G-Lab (Space Studies Institute, Gary Hudson)

Summary of what the thread established

  • Origin. SSI's 2014 NIAC "G-Lab" fundraising john smith 19, 2014-02-17. A Dec 2015 video on a low-cost approach to test breeding at 1/6 and 1/3 g Star-Drive, 2018-07-15.
  • Paper. "An ISS Co-orbital Free-flying Gravitational Biology Laboratory – G-Lab" (ASGSR 2017), baselined on New Glenn (7 m) HMXHMX, 2018-07-16.
  • History (Gary Hudson, as HMXHMX). It began as a zero-g free-flyer with old NASA–NASDA 2.5 m animal centrifuges (FH), then moved to New Glenn.
  • Three g-levels: 1, 1/3 and 1/6 g, with 1 g as the on-orbit control. Two NG flights, and a third to add an axial hub extension.
  • Musk told him reduced-g survival research is not a priority. Smaller projects got no traction HMXHMX, 2018-07-17; HMXHMX, 2018-07-18.

Critiques raised

  • Paul451: G-Lab uses 1 g. At 4 rpm, Mars g at the ends needs ~42 m length; he proposes a Bigelow-skin tube with 11 levels from Mars g to low g Paul451, 2018-07-16.

Open questions

  • Would a co-orbital free-flyer near ISS get crew time for servicing?
