lamontagne: simplest UBM tube station (2024)
Design summary
- Rotating docking port. A slewing ring with pinions and bellows for lateral alignment, active only during transfer lamontagne, 2024-01-28.
- Tube station. 36 tubes in a ring plus 10 in a stick; angled connector rings (some with bulkheads or thrusters); a hub tube with 2 docking ports. Tubes are 7.5 × 15 m; ~190 m diameter lamontagne, 2024-01-28.
- Sequence. Stick first, then ring; bellows align the CoR. Separate stations rather than replicating 2001 lamontagne, 2024-01-29.
- Interfaces. Nexus Aurora UBM ports mikelepage, 2024-01-10.
Critiques raised
- Paul451: Starship fits 7.5 × 9 or 5 × 15 m tubes; nest them; use two rings at different radii Paul451, 2024-01-28.
- MickQ: a docking tube section that rotates 90° to bring the ship into the rotation plane MickQ, 2024-01-28.
- The UBM's 450 kN limit restricts outer-module mass mikelepage, 2024-01-14.
Open questions
- Is the UBM strong enough for ring-module berthing, or does the structure need separate load paths?
