hydra9 (Marcel): SLS-tank artificial-gravity habitat (2014)
Design summary
- Concept. A 50 t Artificial Gravity Habitat derived from an SLS propellant tank, sent to a Lagrange point with 2 SLS launches. >200 t of internal water (50 cm) keeps GCR <25 rem/yr at solar minimum for interplanetary use; cis-lunar <5 rem/yr would need ~50 cm of iron (8× the mass) hydra9, 2015-02-20.
- Spin. 110 m radius, 0.5 g at 2 rpm hydra9, 2015-02-24.
- hydra9 also listed zero-g health effects hydra9, 2015-02-21 and noted twin modules as backup habitat hydra9, 2015-02-23.
Critiques raised
- Coastal Ron: who pays? A cable-stayed bicycle wheel is more mass-efficient Coastal Ron, 2015-02-20.
Open questions
- Is an SLS-derived tank habitat still relevant post-Starship?
