Use cases for rotating stations

The purposes proposed for a first rotating station, roughly in order of how much support they got in the thread. The economics are on business models.

Key results

1. Variable-gravity research platform (strongest consensus)

  • Find the minimum healthy g and the maximum tolerable rpm before designing anything permanent Paul451, 2019-04-16; Greg Hullender, 2022-10-11.
  • Animal research first, at scale. Paul451 argued the first AG station will mainly be a large animal lab, with bigger samples and several species. Engineering tests of 1 g hardware at low g come second, and human trials later, because a handful of hand-picked astronauts gives poor statistics Paul451, 2024-04-03.
  • Useful research questions include:
  • "Lowest viable g for X" curves.
  • Multi-generation partial-g animal studies.
  • Systems engineering at partial g Paul451, 2025-09-17.
  • Testing Artemis lunar-surface hardware at lunar g mikelepage, 2023-12-27.
  • A Mars Environmental Test Facility (Mars dust and rocks at Mars g) LMT, 2018-07-09.
  • Why a station and not the Moon or Mars? A rotating station can vary its spin to control against itself. For example, a Vast-type baton could run at:
  • 1.7 rpm (0 g hub vs lunar g at the ends);
  • 2.6 rpm (0/lunar/Mars);
  • 4.3 rpm (lunar/Mars/Earth).
  • This separates station environment, angular velocity/Coriolis and g-load Paul451, 2022-11-01.
  • Paul451 added that neither Artemis nor Apollo was set up to do lunar-g biology Paul451, 2025-10-27.

2. Gravity refuge / work camp near zero-g work

  • Coastal Ron's Mars-g station. A rest-and-recuperation refuge for asteroid-belt miners and other zero-g workers, far from Earth and Mars, on a long-term lease plus operations contract Coastal Ron, 2022-12-22; Coastal Ron, 2023-06-03.
  • Living quarters for zero-g factory workers. "Factory workers don't live in factories": zero-g factories alongside residential AG stations Coastal Ron, 2018-07-20.
  • rsdavis9: "If I am doing 8 hr shifts assembling spaceships in 0 g, I want to sleep and drink in 1 g" rsdavis9, 2025-09-08.
  • Paul451 disagreed: sleeping in 1 g gives little benefit, because bed rest is the ground analog for 0 g Paul451, 2025-09-09.
  • Asteroid mining support, whether the miners go to the asteroids or bring asteroids back Coastal Ron, 2025-09-17.

3. Tourism / hotel

  • The market tourists would pay for mikelepage, 2018-07-20.
  • Contested: does spin help or hurt tourism?
  • rakaydos: spin removes zero g and spoils the view rakaydos, 2024-03-25.
  • Paul451: partial g is itself novel and comfortable (Apollo crews found lunar g the most comfortable), while full-time 0 g is unpleasant. A hotel would have a small zero-g play core, and most guests would be "done with zero-g" before arrival Paul451, 2024-04-03.
  • See tourism and hotels.

4. Mars-mission support

5. Long-term habitation / settlement

  • Paul451's market categories Paul451, 2022-12-09:
  • (a) ISS-like research station, 3–20 professionals;
  • (b) work camp, 20+;
  • (c) hotel/cruise ship, 20+;
  • (d) settlement, 1000+.
  • Vultur: permanent off-Earth habitation is the only case where the whole station needs to rotate Vultur, 2025-09-16.
  • lamontagne: a station is "a place I want to work"; a habitat is "a place I want to live and raise a family". Stations will come first lamontagne, 2023-01-13.

6. Secondary and speculative uses

Consensus that emerged

  • The first rotating facility will most likely be a testbed in LEO that answers the g/rpm questions Coastal Ron, 2026-09-18.
  • AG is not needed for microgravity work. Micro-g research belongs on separate free-flyers or de-spun cores, because rotating machinery degrades micro-g RanulfC, 2014-03-17; Paul451, 2025-04-11.

Open questions

  • Which paying customer will fund the first human-scale AG station, given that the NASA/ISS science community created an AG research "local minimum"? Paul451, 2025-09-19
  • Is a LEO station for living (not only research or transit) a real market? Coastal Ron, 2026-09-18
